The Palestinian Authority has dismantled a youth orchestra for committing the misdeed of...playing for a group of Holocaust survivors in Israel. The relevant official explained that the Holocaust is a "political issue." What he meant is that most Palestinians and other Arabs are Holocaust deniers, and don't want to engage--or have their youth engage--in any activity that could be taken to imply that the Shoah in fact occurred. It's not pretty, but it's the reality. A Palestinian state, anyone?

Iranian pincer strategy

In a brief but important piece, Alex Fishman, military correspondent for Israel's largest daily and no right-winger, depicts the Iranian strategy of making Israel's life intolerable--apart from the issue of Iran's nukes--by surrounding it with increasingly heavily armed Hamas to the south and Hizballah to the north. This, along with seriously augmented pressure on Israel to set up another terror enclave in the West Bank, is the sum total of the Olmert government's "handling" of these security problems. It either did nothing or launched impulsive, poorly planned wars that did not solve the problems and in some ways made them worse. Bitter but true.
